Persistent Volumes New Access Mode

Kubernetes 1.22 released in August 2021 offers many new features and enhancements. One of those enhancement is in the area of storage. In the previous versions you could only choose one of the three accessModes:

  • ReadOnlyMany: read-only by many nodes
  • ReadWriteOnce: read-write by a single node
  • ReadWriteMany: read-write by many nodes
In Kubernetes 1.22 version, a new access mode is introduced, "ReadWriteOncePod". This new mode is only supported for CSI volumes and Kubernetes version 1.22.
In the CLI, the access modes are abbreviated to:
  • RWO - ReadWriteOnce
  • ROX - ReadOnlyMany
  • RWX - ReadWriteMany
  • RWOP - ReadWriteOncePod
Important! A volume can only be mounted using one access mode at a time, even if it supports many.

kind: PersistentVolumeClaim
apiVersion: v1

name: new-access-mode

Existing PersistentVolumes can take benefit of this new access mode.
